Fruit Longevity

2025-09-20

These are my thought about the common fruits we buy (mostly from Costco in Newark) and keep in our house. Perhaps we store them improperly or I am doing something else wrong but this is my list from ‘lasts the longest’ to ‘unusable in an instant’.

Top Tier

Apples - These last quite a long time, and they are still edible if they are a little soft. Note we mostly get fuji or some other crispy apple.

Bananas - I think these last around two weeks in our house, we hang them up. And at the end of two weeks I try to make banana bread or freeze them. Sneha recently got angry that I had too many bananas in the freezer and we composted some. Also we hang these from a little hook

Mid Tier

Grapes - They last quite a long time in a bunch. They will get a little soft as they age but are usually pretty good, this accounts for all varieties (black, purple, and green)

Blueberries - These go back slightly quicker than grapes and will get a little white fuzz on the bottom that you have to be careful for, it makes then taste bad quickly

Blackberries - Sometimes Costco has these and they are both on the expensive side and delicious. I really enjoy them but have to eat them quickly.

Low Tier

Raspberries - These deserve their own tier for sure, they go bad so quickly. I need to eat them all within a week, perhaps half a week, or they will get fuzz and mold. I store them in the fridge but to no avail. It almost makes me think that I should make jam out of them rather than eat them since jam will last longer.

This is my current list, I think these are the main fruits we eat. I am sure I forgot something obvious. If the list changes I will send out an update.
