50 Pound Bag of Rice
2025-07-05
Ok, a long while ago I bought a 50 lb. bag of 3 lady Vietnamese rice. It was one sale, instead of being $50 it was $45 or something like that, and I knew it is a good brand of rice, and rice doesn’t go bad quickly. So it has been years since I bought this bag of rice and we are probably 60% done with it, we dont eat jasmine rice too quickly, we make two cups once a week more or less.
So I have been reflecting about this purchase for a while. And I think in theory it is a good one, I am saving that $5, the rice hasn’t gone bad or gotten any bugs or anything, and it will only be a few more years until we finish the bag. But in practice I think this purchase is a mistake, it is just too bulky and we eat it too slow. I think if I had a better storage system of some kind, it lives in a drawer in our kitchen, or if we ate jasmine rice quicker it would be good. But the rice bag is so big it is hard to move, I have spilled rice multiple times, and the storage is a pain.
So I think for me, 25 lb. bags of rice is the max, wither it is Japanese, Jasmine, or Basmati it is much easier to handle and go through these bags. Even if it costs a few more dollars it is worth it to me to have a more manageable size.
