The Church of Technology

2025-06-06

I am not a good writer, if I was maybe I would be in a different profession. So it is hard for me to translate ideas into beautiful, Murakami-esque, paragraphs. But I really like ideas and think about them a ton, so here is one of them. It is kind of an idea and kind of a question, so here I pose it to you:

What would a church that worships technology be like.

I am sure this has been in a ton of Sci-Fi books, and I have read a few. But I guess this is kind of my take.

Lets start with the god, perhaps it is an electron or a 0 and 1 or something of that nature. There is no book, maybe there is a holy hard drive? Maybe when you go into a standard church there are huge screens, huge huge screens, that show the holy text or images or the sacred land, or something else. Maybe all of the churches are made of stainless steel, silicone, carbon, copper, and other modern technology materials. Instead of a baptism, perhaps babies are bathed in light?

Could the priest be an android? Literally a computer reads you the words or sings the songs? Their steel fist blesses you and your kiss it. Maybe instead of an android it is a cyborg, a person with a robotic arm or leg, the marriage of technology and humanity stands at the pulpit?

And what does the congregation wear? Simple clothes? Cloth that has copper woven into it? Do they look absurdly modern? Do they wear only plastic or metal? Is their clothes all white or all black?

I dunno, I thought this was a fun thought exercise that I think of a lot.
