Folding Clothes While The Kids Are Awake

2026-10-31

Typing out the blog on a laptop instead of a phone is phenomenal, I feel like an older person but laptops are mostly superior to phones. Anyway.

Sometimes my kids, and mostly my youngest, will get up early in the morning. My lovely wife Sneha will sometimes get up with them but since I am a morning person I am usually the one that gets up with them and try to let her sleep in a bit.

But this has been presenting a challenge to me recently, since our youngest is sleeping from about 9PM to 5AM. And most day when he gets up at 5AM he is up up, there is no coaxing him back to sleep. and I think this is a phase (I hope) and will change in a few months, but it leaves me with a small dilemma.

The first thing to know is that I like sleep and I would prefer 8 hours. Perhaps that is too big of an ask but I function much better on about 8 hours of sleep, at work, as a father, as a husband, etc. So My goal is usually 8 hours.

Secondly I used to do chores when the kids when to bed, the big ones that we do everyday are: cleaning and dishes. While the ones we need to do more on a weekly cadence are: clothes washing and folding. And when the youngest would sleep more it wasn’t an issue at all, while the kids were asleep Sneha and I would watch some light hearted TV (or chat) and do chores. We would watch the Great British Bake off and fold clothes. Or I would listen to a podcast (perhaps ‘the rest is history’ podcast) and wash dishes. There are also some non-chore things I would do in my free time, this blog being one of them, and fun side programming things, those have suffered and will continue to suffer for a little while.

But since the sleep schedule has changed I also need to make changes. And in the past I did switch to cleaning and doing dishes while the kids were awake, it was too much to try to do this after the slept. But I think in addition I need to fold clothes and do laundry while the kids are awake, it is too hard to fold when they are asleep, I am too tired to stay awake, and we are running out of clothes.

I hope this topic wasn’t too mundane.
